Why Do Relationships Confuse Us?
05/08/2010
Stop kissing frogs in the vane hope that they will turn into a prince! That's the advice from author and relationship counsellor Allan Hunter who believes women and men are confused about relationships. He blames Disney. In his new book, Princes, Frogs and Ugly Sisters, he shows how many of the Grimm Brothers' healing tales have been 'Disneyfied' and their true meaning and the valuable relationship lessons they once contained have been weakened and in some cases have disappeared altogether.
For instance, Hunter reveals that in the original stories Cinderella had no fairy godmother and the ugly sisters were not ugly at all, quite the reverse: Grimms' version states that they were " beautiful and fair of face, but vile and black of heart". Then there is the Frog King in Disney's version the princess kisses the frog in gratitude because he retrieved her golden ball and he turns into a handsome prince explaining he had been enchanted. In Grimms' original version, the princess flings the frog against a wall to kill it and this is when the frog turns into a prince. These original stories, he argues, have real and vital insights into our pursuit of romance and relationships and can also help us find our very own prince or princess. As Allan himself says: "The real tale of Cinderella will tell you what you need to do to be successful in love, but you will need to forget the saccharine Disney version. That version will tell you nothing".
